Every spring, credit union executives from around the country make their way to Washington D.C. for a conference focused on shaping policy and talking to the policymakers who affect credit unions and their members. Luis Reyes, FFCU’s Chief Operations Officer, was among 70 Illinois credit union activists and over 4,200 credit union executives from across the country to attend the conference.

All participants received updates about legislative, political and regulatory advocacy news, and discussed ways to achieve the credit union movement’s collective legislative and regulatory goals. Among the goals expressed was the strategic vision of the Credit Union National Association’s President and CEO, Bill Cheney, in which “Americans choose credit unions as their best financial partner,” and credit unions “Unite for Good” to achieve it.

The conference also provided an opportunity for attendees to visit with their federal law makers and discuss some of the core issues. These topics included: preserving the credit union tax exempt status, reducing regulatory burden, and increasing credit union member business lending. All of these are imperative to maintaining an economic and regulatory environment that allows credit unions to maximize the benefits to members, and will help credit unions address the need for additional business lending in their communities.

From left: Luis Reyes (FFCU), Bohdan Watral (Seflreliance UAFCU), Congresswoman Schakowsky (Dist 9), Lee Schafer (Alliant CU), Dan Adams (Alliant CU).

Responding to his time with Illinois’ Congresswoman, Luis Reyes said, “It’s important for credit unions to come together, establish a strong presence, and speak with our legislators about the issues that not only affect our business, but, more importantly, the over 96 million members that we serve collectively, nationwide. I was grateful for the opportunity to speak with Congresswoman Schakowsky on behalf of our FFCU membership.”

Since the visits to the hill, the House passed the Eliminate Privacy Notice Confusion Act (H.R. 749) and the bill will now move on for Senate consideration. 7 cosponsors were added to this legislation as a result of the hill visits. If passed, this bill would eliminate a costly and duplicative requirement that has proven to be more confusing than helpful to consumers.
